The cabotage issue has been a highlight in the parliament recently. As a policymaker, MIMA has conducted a study on it. The cabotage policy research was focused on the impact of the liberalisation of the policy in Sabah, Sarawak, and the Federal Territory of Labuan. On that note, the study has been presented to the governmental entity in Sabah and Sarawak to get an idea of the way forward on this issue based on MIMA’s research.

On 26 April 2021 (Monday), Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Bakri bin Mohd Zinin, Distinguished Fellow of MIMA, headed the delegation to present cabotage policy at a meeting in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.  Our Senior Researcher from the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI), Cdr Ang Chin Hup, presented the findings of the cabotage policy study in more details to the audience that mostly are industry people. About 60 state government officials and stakeholders in shipping and commercial industries attended the meeting. They well received it as they see different perspective pertaining to the cabotage issue. In attendance were MIMA Director-General Datuk Dr Sabirin Jaafar and Under Secretary of Maritime Division, MOT, Capt Halim.

Everyone is focusing on the presentation by Cdr. Ang Chin Hup (R)

The meeting chaired by Tuan Mohd Jasmin bin Julpin, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Infrastructure Development of Sabah. We would like to thank all who have attended the meeting and giving a chance to MIMA to present the study in details. We hope this could help the Government of Sabah explore more on the cabotage policy to improve the sector.
