Message from the DG

Director General

Greetings and Happy New Year!  2016 is finally over and has been a very challenging year for MIMA. Many achievements have been accomplished that contributed to the well-being of Malaysia’s Maritime interest.

Throughout 2016, two major conferences successfully conducted were the International Conference on the Straits of Malacca and the South China Sea Conference. Both conferences contributed to the deeper understanding of issues pertaining to security and environment that has contributed to the nation’s development and economic well-being. Other major event that took place in 2016 was the launching of ‘Perlindungan dan Indemniti Malaysia (P&I Malaysia) Sdn Bhd’. P&I Malaysia is the first marine liability insurance for vessel with 300GT and below. The company is fully funded by the Ministry of Transport Malaysia and supported by the Marine Department Malaysia, Malaysia Shipowners’ Association and MIMA.

In 2016 also saw two of MIMA’s Fellow being promoted to Senior Fellow. I would like to congratulate and wishing all the best to the two new Senior Fellows, Captain Martin A Sebastian (R) and Datin Sharina bt Shaukat.

On enhancing our management system, several new initiatives were introduced and implemented such as the ‘traffic light system’ which monitors the performance of MIMA as a whole. The ‘traffic light system’ will be further enhanced with the integration of a new ‘Key Performance Indicator’, which will be officially introduced in 2017 replacing the current SKT system.

For 2017, I expect MIMA to march on forward as greater challenges in implementing the core business of providing consultancy services to the government and the private sector is set on a challenging budget. However, this would not hinder MIMA from continuing the responsibility entrusted in us as a maritime think tank’s ‘Centre of Excellence’.

Many programmes are planned for 2017 including the 2nd Sulu Sulawesi Conference in August and the 6th South China Sea Conference and exhibition in October. These conferences will be aimed at sharing the latest issues regarding maritime environment and condition. It will further boost confidence building measures in making the region safe and secure for development.

I hope 2017 will be a fruitful year for MIMA and its stakeholders as it has been in the previous years. Continuous support from government agencies, private sector and the maritime communities is very much appreciated and we look forward for a prosperous year ahead.
