The Maritime Institute of Malaysia received a delegation from the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), South Korea on 14 September 2017. The KMI, one of the 46 institutions in Korea under the Korean Prime Minister’s Department, has five main research divisions focusing on port management and logistics, marine transportation, ocean and coastal management, fisheries, and industrial intelligence and strategy. The industrial intelligence and strategy research division is a coordinating team comprising the Polar Research Centre and the Law of the Sea Research Centre.

The delegation was headed by Dr. Hyun Dae-song, Director of KMI and Head of Dokdo and the Law of the Sea Research Centre. He was accompanied by Dr. Choi Jee Hyn, Senior Researcher and Ms. Kim Juhyung, Researcher.

Discussion during the Visit

The KMI delegates and MIMA exchanged opinions and ideas on current maritime matters including the rise of China in economic and military areas, South China Sea issues, North Korea nuclear testing, the relationship between North and South Korea, Marawi, and navigation orders in Malaysia. MIMA experts shared their experiences and achievements in maritime research and policy.

Both organizations agreed on the need to explore opportunities for future exchanges and collaboration in the area of maritime research.
