3rd Workshop Network of Experts on Maritime and Territory in the Asia-Pacific Region (NEMT Workshop)

Themed “Peaceful Management and Settlement of Maritime Disputes in the Asia-Pacific Region” this workshop was co-organized by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), MIMA and the East Asian International Relations (EAIR) CAUCUS.

The workshop gathered academics and practitioners and discussed issues relating to territorial disputes in East Asian as well as explored ways of building confidence in the region. Forty-five participants from Malaysia, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Russia, Canada and Japan attended the workshop which was divided into four sessions.

Panelists in the first session included Professor Dato’ BA Hamzah from National Defense University of Malaysia, Professor Kimie Hara from Waterloo University, and Professor Renato Cruz de Castro from De La Salle University. They spoke on the cognizance of transitional geo-political trends in the management of maritime disputes in East Asia. The second session examined ASEAN perspectives on maritime and territorial disputes in East Asia by Ms. Sumathy Permal (MIMA), Associate Professor Kuik Cheng-Chwee (EAIR CAUCUS) and Dr. Tran Truong Thuy (Diplomatic Academy Vietnam). Discussion here focused on the ASEAN States’ Triple Dilemmas and the need for maritime crisis management in the South China Sea.

The third session deliberated on territorial disputes in East Asia by Professor Tamara Troyakova (Far Eastern Federal State University) and Dr. Kim Won-hee (KMI). The final session covered the rise of China and its impact on maritime and territorial disputes in the East Asia region by Associate Professor Masuo T. Chisako (Kyushu University) and Professor Stuart Kaye of the University of Wollongong.

This workshop allowed for a better understanding on maritime territorial disputes in the East Asia region particularly those involving Japan-Korea and China-ASEAN.
