Malaysia World Maritime Week 2017 Conference & Exhibition

This year’s World Maritime Day celebrated the theme “Connecting Ships, Ports and People” reflecting the many diverse actors comprising the shipping and maritime industry. The three represent the main components of the industry with each playing a significant role in its sustainability continuing to be a major driver of global stability and development.

As an IMO Council member, Malaysia is committed to improving the regulatory framework for global shipping and has ratified more than 20 IMO Conventions and signed Maritime Transport Agreements with 12 countries. Malaysia is also an active member of the APEC Port Services Network (ASPN), the ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group and will host the Cooperative Forum for the Straits of Malacca and Singapore this year.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Transport and the Marine Department and hosted by the Malaysia Shipowners’ Association. It attracted more than 5,000 maritime professionals, including high-level delegates from port authorities, industry leaders, maritime key players, and maritime education and training institutes.

As previously, this year’s World Maritime Day allowed the nation to give recognition to the industry through the conferment of awards to individuals and companies representing the best of the Malaysian shipping industry.

The highlight of this event was the launching of the Malaysia Shipping Master Plan (MSMP) by the Minister of Transport Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai. The MSMP is a 5-year plan (2017-2022) aimed at revitalizing Malaysia shipping industry for a stronger economy. The plan was formulated by the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) with active stakeholder engagement and based on a concept paper developed by the Malaysia Shipowners’ Association.

MIMA participated in the World Maritime Week Exhibition under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport and was represented by Hafizul Roslan, Muslim Othman, Zainol Azman, Shafiq Ismail, Irfan Aryan, and Khairul Hasan.

Next year’s World Maritime Day has been set for 27 September 2018 by the IMO.
