Exchanging views and practices on ocean use planning

Visit from the National Ocean Technology Center (NOTC), Tianjin, China
21 November 2017

A delegation from China’s National Ocean Technology Center (NOTC) visited MIMA to exchange views, experiences, and knowledge on sea use development and planning. Representatives from China included Prof Xu Wei, and NOTC Associate Research Fellows Mr Wu He and Mr Zhang Yuanfei.

During the meeting

The meeting discussed experiences from both sides on the adoption and implementation of spatial planning in the oceans, achievements, best practices as well as lessons learnt. The Chinese National Marine Functional Zoning (MFZ) (2011 – 2020) and the National Plan for Islands Protection (2011 – 2020) were detailed out as cases for China while MIMA highlighted the draft ocean policy and recent work on spatial planning in Malaysia.

The meeting benefited from the rich experiences from China especially on the establishment and implementation of MFZ, and confirmed exploring further possible opportunities to establish joint collaboration and cooperation.
