Business Opportunities in Malaysia’s Maritime Industries

Maritime industries were the focus of a talk by a researcher from MIMA at the above event during a session on Entrepreneurship Opportunities in the Agro & Marine-based Industries organised by the Sabah Economic Development & Investment Authority (SEDIA).

Themed Surging Towards Excellence, the SDC 10th Anniversary Carnival attracted many young entrepreneurs from around Sabah and was launched by Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan who represented the Chief Minister of Sabah cum Chairman of SEDIA. The carnival showcased business opportunities in agro-based, marine, tourism, and creative industries and included skills training and financial support opportunities for them.

Cdr Ang of MIMA’s Centre for Maritime Economics & Industries gave an overview of the maritime industry in Malaysia and highlighted the opportunities and challenges faced by its various sectors. He also noted the availability of business and job opportunities in ports, shipping, logistics, and ship building ship repair, the need for skills training, and the application of the Internet of Things (IoT). Among the questions posed included the impact of the cabotage policy on Sabah.


Answering questions from the audience

The session on the agro and marine-based industries was moderated by Datuk Mohd Basri Abd. Gafar, President of Federation of Sabah Industries. Among the topics spoken by other speakers were business opportunities in livestock, honey bee, homestay, Kota Kinabalu International Film Festival, Creative Industry at ITCC and business on wheels.

MIMA would like to thank SEDIA for this opportunity to share its ideas on business and job opportunities in the maritime industry in Sabah. The institute looks forward to continuously promoting maritime industries in the country.
