MIMA - CIISS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
BELT & ROAD INITIATIVE AND PROMOTING REGIONAL SECURITY

 26 – 27 April 2018

Themed “Turning Risks of Conflict into Opportunities for Cooperation” the conference was jointly organized by the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) and the China Institute for International and Strategic Studies (CIISS).

YBhg. Vice Admiral Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Ramli b. Hj. Mohd Nor (Ret.), Chairman of MIMA and Major General (Retd) Gong Xianfu, Vice Chairman of CIISS delivered the Welcoming Remarks while the Introductory Speech was delivered by the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, H.E. Mr. Liang Caide.

The conference gathered international and local experts and assessed BRI from a comprehensive perspective including economic relations between China and ASEAN, its contribution in reducing tensions over maritime disputes in Southeast Asia, and opportunities for strengthening economic, trade, social, and political ties among BRI countries. The speakers elaborated on ways to incorporate the sustainability component in the initiative, the strategic issues associated with recent developments in the region, as well as pointed out some means to address gaps in the process. 

In his closing remarks, YBhg. First Admiral Dato’ Chin Yoon Chin (Ret.), Director General of MIMA noted the role of the BRI as a tool to re-active and expand the legendary silk and maritime roads with soft and hard infrastructure developments that should be based on mutual dialogue, promoting Confidence Building Measures, and enhancing networking.

A field visit to the Eastern Fleet of the Kota Kinabalu Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base at Sepanggar, Sabah was also organized where delegates were briefed on the background and role of the fleet.

The conference has become a bridge for communication and exchange between the two countries that enhances mutual trust and cooperation.
