For 2016, CMER carried out the following research projects:

  1. Prevention of Pollution from Ships through the Adoption of Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSA) within South-East Asia: Protection of Pulau Kukup (Kukup Island) and Tanjung Piai (Cape Piai)  
  2. The Application of Marine Spatial Planning in the Straits of Malacca
  3. Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity in Areas beyond National Jurisdiction: Interest and Options for Malaysia 
  4. Harmful Algal Bloom Management and response in Malaysia: Assessment and Strategies
  5. Conservation of Threatened Coastal and Marine Ecosystems in Malaysia: Issues, Challenges, and the Way Forward

  3. Coastal Blue Carbon: Policy and Management Options for Malaysia towards Prioritising Coastal Ecosystems Protection 
  4. Shrimp Farming vs. Mangrove Conservation: Economic Valuation for Sustainable Management
  5. Fisheries Sector Subsidies and Their Impacts on Resource Management in Peninsular Malaysia
