Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment

Research

Cheryl has carried out research on various aspects of the coastal and marine environment over the years. Her primary research interests include marine pollution, marine protected areas, natural resources management, and green maritime shipping conventions. She was also involved in a number of consultancy projects including the UNEP/GEF - Reversing Environmental Degradation Trends in the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand (Coral and Coral Reefs Component), the National Coastal and Marine Environment Profile of Malaysia for the National Oceanography Directorate, MOSTI, as well as corporate social responsibility (research planning) for ports in Southern Johor, and sustainable ports development (environmental component) for the GIZ-ASEAN programme. She is currently the national consultant for the IMO – Norad marine environment project on identifying and establishing particularly sensitive sea areas (PSSAs) in South East Asia (for Malaysia).

Being a marine biologists by background, Cheryl is also an advanced SCUBA diver (NAUI) and has dived around several islands (Kapas, Redang, Tioman Island, and at the Western Gulf of Thailand) to carry out research work. Besides that, she is a certified eco-diver by the Reef Check International Foundation since March 2007. Prior to joining MIMA, she worked on the benthic blue green algae (cyanophyta) distribution and water quality assessment in the coral reefs of Redang Island Marine Park in collaboration with the Terengganu State Marine Park Section. Following that, she was awarded the best thesis for the project conducted under the Marine Biology Programme 2005. Cheryl is also a lifetime member of the Golden Key International Honour Society for excellence in academic achievements.

As part of her MSc degree, Cheryl undertook a placement with the government Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) in Lowestoft, United Kingdom in 2011. Cefas is the UK's largest and most diverse applied marine science organisation and operates as an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Cheryl's project undertook a critical review of the EU's MESMA framework on spatially managed areas, as part of the wider marine spatial planning initiative.

Additionally, Cheryl was awarded an Asian Conservation Training Fellowship 2006 by the Earthwatch Institute of Australia; full sponsorship from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the Training Programme for Young Leaders 2008 in Hyogo, Japan; and funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Science Council of Taiwan for the 2012 South-East Asia Network for Education and Training (SEA-NET) Project as a Visiting Scientist at Academia Sinica in Taipei. In 2014, she was selected and sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to represent Malaysia to the premier International Leadership Programme to the United States under a Multi-Regional Programme on Coastal and Marine Management. The programme essentially focuses on building mutual understanding between the US and other nations through carefully designed professional visits and exchanges for current and emerging foreign leaders in their respective fields.

Cheryl was further identified to participate as a Professional Fellow in the YSEALI (Young Southeast Asia Leaders Initiative) in 2014. The YSEALI community essentially consists of young leaders from Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Laos, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam who are making a difference in their communities, countries, and the region with a focus on critical topics which include civic engagement, environment and natural resources management, and entrepreneurship and economic development. Through a variety of programmes and engagements, YSEALI builds leadership capabilities in the region, strengthen ties between the US and Southeast Asia, and nurture an ASEAN community.

She completed an Interdisciplinary Certificate Programme on Ocean Governance: Policy, Law and Management at the International Ocean Institute (IOI) and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada in 2015 through a joint sponsorship award under the WWF Russell E. Train Fellowships, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) based at the University of Delaware, and IOI-Canada; and Certificate in Sustainable Environmental Management from the University of California, Berkeley in 2016 with funding from the UC Berkeley’s College of Natural Resources.

In addition to research activities, Cheryl has been frequently involved as a Panel Reviewer in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) project evaluation committee under the national Sea-to-Space Cluster and related programmes, training students/interns from marine sciences programmes at the national universities, and occasionally in the review of the relevant courses and syllabus content at the local universities.

Cheryl is currently a member of several National Steering Committees and Technical Working Groups on environmental management and resources protection initiatives relating to national and regional coastal and marine programmes.
