For 2016, SOM carried out the following research projects:

  1. The Impact of Philippines Arbitration Against China on Claimant States and ASEAN in Relation to Maritime Dispute in the South China Sea
  2. The 1982 Treaty Between The Republic of Indonesia and Malaysia Relating To The Legal Regime of Archipelagic State and The Rights of Malaysia In The Territorial Sea and Archipelagic Waters As Well As In The Airspace Above The Territorial Sea, Archipelagic Waters and The Territory of The Republic of Indonesia Lying Between East and West Malaysia (1982 Jakarta Treaty): Contemporary Issues and Implication to Malaysia’s Interest
  3. Critical Issues in the South China Sea Dispute:  Drafting of Policy Paper for South China Sea
  4. Malaysia-Indonesia Strategic Relations: A Review vi-a vis the Indonesia’s Global Maritime Fulcrum Strategy
  5. 21st Century Maritime Silk Road:  Principal Component of One Belt One Road Policy
  6. Fisheries Enforcement Issues and Treatment of Fishermen between Indonesia and Malaysia:  Challenges, Progress and Way Forward

  1. The Concept of a Single Maritime Boundary (SMB): Its Application In Defending Malaysia’s Maritime Boundary Baselines
  2. Protection of Maritime Archaeological and Historical Wrecks, Treasure Troves and Artifacts in Malaysia's Maritime Zones: A Review of National Legislation and the International Convention on Underwater Cultural Heritage 2001, UNCLOS 1982 and the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks 2007
