6th Southeast Asia Port Expansion Summit

The sixth edition of the Port Expansion Summit was organized by Noppen Group, a leading international company facilitating businesses across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America. The summit gathered government officials, investors, port authorities, and port & terminal operators from Southeast Asia to discuss with consultants, architects, construction companies, equipment providers, and service groups, in order to better explore the market and support port developments which are moving into the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0).

The theme of the summit focuses on port expansion in Southeast Asia, therefore a few major topics were discussed, such as the challenges and opportunities of building and expanding major port projects in Southeast Asia, and alternative port management structures and ownership models.

Senior Researcher Commander Ang Chin Hup (R) from the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) was requested as one of the summit speakers. He delivered a presentation on Sustainable Ports Development in Southeast Asia, focusing on three pertinent issues affecting the port industry in the region. They are the port performance, sustainable development, and adaptation of digitalized technology of IR4.0.

The summit attracted approximately 150 participants who were industry experts and practitioners from the region and beyond. Diverse speakers from Southeast Asia countries also attended and presented about their respective ports like Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia. Other countries like Korea was also present, as well as one speaker from Port of Rotterdam presenting the future plan of Rotterdam Ports.

MIMA expresses its warmest gratitude to the organizer for the opportunity to present a paper in the Port Expansion Summit. As a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on maritime affairs, MIMA researchers will continue to speak up on pertinent issues on sustainable port developments in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region.
