Looking Forward to 2018:

dg mima2Happy New Year! 2017 just flew by and, recounting it, many events and activities took place during which MIMA achieved several firsts. The year 2018 will be another tough year with tight budgets and limited manpower. Nevertheless, MIMA will endeavour to provide valuable and informed advice to our stakeholders and other maritime agencies nationwide.

In 2017 MIMA implemented the New Business Model in handling maritime issues to enable us to attract funds for events, activities, seminars, and conferences. We will continue using this model this year and MIMA looks forward to continuous support and, where possible, funding from the maritime fraternity to ease our financial standing.

Following the announcement by the Honourable Prime Minister for MIMA to be the Centre of Excellence for maritime affairs for the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), we have forwarded several proposals together with action plans to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will take on the responsibility when they are approved. MIMA would like to thank the Honourable Prime Minister for his confidence in MIMA and we pledge to keep the Jalur Gemilang flying proudly.

MIMA collaborated with several international institutions in expounding maritime economic, environment and security issues in the region especially those relating to the South China Sea. At the same time the institute conducted confidence building seminars and workshops for our stakeholders and international partners. For MIMA’s 2017 South China Sea Conference, we incorporated, for the first time, local and international marine industries by partnering with NRG Exhibition (M) Bhd in running an exhibition during the conference. The response was overwhelming and we may continue this format in the coming years.

MIMA would like to thank two of our staff members who were seconded to MIMA and have returned to their parent units, namely Mahummar Gadaffi Sorilaut b Omar, our Director of Administration and Finance and Commander Nur Azmel b Awaludin a researcher. We would also like to wish Mohammad Nadzrin b Safiei happy retirement. Ms Sumathy Permal has been appointed Centre Head for Straits of Malacca and at the same time promoted to Fellow. Congratulations Ms Sumathy!

For 2018, I expect MIMA to explore new challenges in the maritime realm where we could make some difference and enhance governance issues that have been highlighted to us by our stakeholders. The marine environment, transportation, port management, safety and maritime security aspects will be explored and given due consideration as well.

The conferences, seminars and workshops planned this year will continue our efforts to build confidence and provide avenues for networking for all maritime agencies and stakeholders both locally and internationally in making the region safe and secure for continuous development.

I am confident that 2018 will be another fruitful year for MIMA and its stakeholders as in previous years. We value the continuous support from government agencies, the private sector, and the maritime communities and look forward to another eventful and productive year.
