VDR management system for fishing boat activities

The latest in the series of MIMA Talks was by Associate Professor Lin Chung Hung from the Department of Systems and Naval Mechatronic Engineering of the National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. He spoke on the ‘Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) for Fishing Boats Activities’ based on the Taiwanese experience and enforced by the Taiwan Fishery Agency. This multi-purpose system facilitates effective fuel management of fishing boats and assists the government in managing fuel subsidy allocations for them.

Representatives from the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and Royal Malaysian Navy attended the discussion.

During the meeting

The talk highlighted the application of the VDR management system in providing comprehensive analyses of fishing activities, the possibility of integrating satellite communications for emergency rescue functions, providing evidence in the occurrence of maritime accidents and disputes where suitable, as well as in keeping fishing vessels away from prohibited areas for resources protection. Overall, the meeting provided a good sharing of views and experience among the participants.
