MyWIMA Annual General Meeting

MIMA Seminar Room, 25 June 2018

Women in Maritime Association Malaysia (MyWIMA) convened its first AGM today at the Maritime Institute of Malaysia. MyWIMA is the national chapter of Women in Maritime Association, a collection of non-profit associations recognized by the International Maritime Organization for implementing a programme of empowerment of women in maritime industries. This is in line with the fifth of the United Nation’s 17 sustainable development goals aimed at achieving gender equality and to empower all women and girls by 2030.

The meeting was chaired by Dr Yasmin Mohd Hasni from the Marine Department of Malaysia as the MyWIMA chairperson. The agenda included the election of the organizational committee, reporting on the progress of the Mywima database, updating on the Regional Women's Conference on Maritime Asia 2018, and other related matters.

The AGM was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Transport, the Marine Department Malaysia, the Port Authorities and the Maritime Institute of Malaysia. MyWIMA membership is currently limited to maritime governance and regulatory agencies but will be extended to all women engaged in the shipping industry, ports, and seafaring occupations in the near future.

The AGM also reported on the progress of the MyWIMA database. MIMA has been tasked with conducting research on behalf of MyWIMA on the number of women involved in the country’s maritime sector. Questionnaire forms have been distributed online covering company background, age, salary, training, and education level of women in the industry. For that purpose MIMA has held a series of meetings with relevant agencies and stakeholders to get feedback and help distribute the survey form. The results of the research will be presented at the regional women’s maritime conference in November.
