Visit by Researchers from Korea Maritime Institute

MIMA received Ms. RyuHee-Young and Mr. Ban Young-Gil from the Korea Maritime Institute a government-funded research institute specialising in the field of maritime affairs and fisheries. KMI researchers have been regular visitors to MIMA to discuss maritime related issues in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.


The meeting covered the coastal shipping industry in Southeast Asia particularly in Malaysia. Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) elaborated on Malaysia’s shipping and ports industry and the various plans and strategies such as the Malaysia Shipping Master Plan and National Ports Strategy to revitalise and enhance the sector. Ms. Chin Yim Leng mentioned the cabotage policy and the functions of the Domestic Shipping Licensing Board (DSLB) in protecting domestic shipping companies in Malaysia.

The meeting also discussed maritime industries in Southeast Asia and the possibility of having a single shipping market within ASEAN. The KMI researchers were briefed on the importance of the Malacca Straits as an international shipping route and the emergence of Southeast Asia as a new economic block. Overall, the meeting was a beneficial as researchers from the two institutes shared knowledge on maritime issues. MIMA looks forward to collaborate with KMI in the future research on maritime affairs.
