ISM Seminar on Gender Sensitization at Auditorium ISM

The above seminar was attended by representatives from various government agencies such as The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, Royal Malaysia Police, Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, Malaysian Prison Department, Ministry of Health Malaysia. Muhamad Shafiq Ismail a researcher from the Centre for Ocean Law and Policy attended on behalf MIMA.

The seminar provided insights on the differences between sexes and gender from the community perspective as well as the struggle for gender rights.

Mr. Chua from KPWKM presented on “Women and Gender Empowerment”. He explained that gender is not the definition of sexes but about the differences between males and females in society and how culture affects the roles and responsibilities of women and men, the reach and availability of resources, wealth, opportunities, needs, perceptions, and others. He mentioned that the government has introduced a number of policies to raise women's status through various programmes such as the 11th Malaysia Plan, and acceding to the Convention of the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

Dr. Ummu Atiyah Ahmad Zakuan of the International School of Studies, UUM presented on “Women and Leadership in Malaysia: A New Narrative?” She focused on the importance of women's representatives in the country's politics to represent the voice of women. She noted that more women voted in the last GE14 proving that women were more aware of their responsibilities in determining the direction of the country. Another recognition of women's capabilities was the appointment of Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the first woman to hold office as deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.

The final speaker, Dr. Wan Munira Wan Jaafar of University Putra Malaysia, presented on “Contesting Gender in Everyday Life” where she focused on gender intentions and how it exists in society.
