International Maritime Good Governance for Sustainable Development

The Bangladesh Institute of Maritime Research and Development (BIMRAD) organised its maiden International Seminar on the above mentioned theme focused on maritime policy matters, and for sharing knowledge with like-minded institutions from the region.

BIMRAD is Bangladesh’s first academic research institute involved in providing a common platform for facilitating maritime intellectuals, researchers and institutions contribute their efforts on promoting the sustainable use of the seas, support blue economy initiatives, and strengthen the sustainable development of the marine environment and resources.

The one-day seminar brought together speakers and experts from think tanks in the region including from Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and the United States. Speakers included Admiral Prof Jayanath Colombage (Ret.), Rear Admiral Md Khurshed Alam (Ret.), Captain Richard Sears (Ret.), and Admiral RK Dhowan (Ret.). Cheryl Rita Kaur, Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment represented MIMA.

The forum focused on scholarly presentations and conceptual perspectives of good opening for the exploration and exploitation of marine resources, maritime security challenges, challenges for pollution control especially marine debris, as well as role of enforcing agencies towards conserving the maritime resources through regional and global cooperation, collaboration, understanding and partnerships.

As a national maritime policy think tank, MIMA had the pleasure to share and exchange views with like-minded institutions in the region. Further cooperation will be established with BIMRAD for policy exchanges and sharing of knowledge and experiences between MIMA and BIMRAD.
