RSIS-MIMA Virtual Roundtable

S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) organized the abovementioned roundtable to provide an opportunity to raise and discuss matters of interest and relevance to the cooperation relating to Straits of Malacca.

Ms. Jane Chan Git Yin, Research Fellow of RSIS spoke on the current development of the Malacca and Singapore Straits including cooperation and coordination of the Straits. Ms. Sumathy Permal noted that there is existing cooperation and there are some key areas that can be considered for the MIMA- RSIS cooperation.

The meeting discussed on recent developments in the Lombok Straits, Ms. Cheryl Rita Kaur shared on the Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSA) regional project (of which Lombok is the area chosen by the Indonesian counterpart), and related deliberations at the TTEG meetings. She also shared on the developments on Malaysia’s proposed protection of the sensitive sea areas in the Pulau Kukup and Tanjung Piai (PK-TP) Ramsar sites in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS) under the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Ms. Jane touched on the implementation issue of the IMO 2020 Regulation, a new global cap by the IMO on Sulphur content in marine fuels which came into effect on 1 January 2020. Among the concerns are on obstacles for the shipping sector in the Post-Covid-19.

RSIS thanked MIMA for joining the online discussion and insights. The meeting ended with hopes that RSIS and MIMA can continue look for cohesive pictures in the regional agenda.
