HD-MIMA Virtual Discussion on SCS

The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) organised an online meeting to share key insights on the recent developments in maritime issues, including security challenges and marine environment and resource management in the South China Sea. The meeting was attended by HD representatives, and MIMA representatives from the Centre for Straits of Malacca (SOM) and the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment (CMER).

Sumathy Permal discussed the current developments in geo-strategic and non-traditional security issues. She also briefed the meeting about MIMA’s activities in 2019, which included conferences on the following: the Belt and Road Initiative, ASEAN Indo-Pacific Outlook, the Security Cooperation in the South China Sea, and the International Conference on the Indo-Pacific.

Cheryl Rita Kaur also updated the meeting on MIMA’s research and follow-ups from the joint workshop organised with HD Centre in 2018, particularly on fisheries management and marine environmental protection focusing on marine pollution (i.e., marine litter issues). She further elaborated on the research gaps and needs concerning environmental and resources management, and various initiatives in place at the national and regional levels.

The representatives from HD then highlighted their ongoing work on assessing the status of fish stocks in the South China Sea, as well as the maritime law enforcement of different countries in the endeavour of promoting regional maritime cooperation.
HD thanked MIMA for joining the online discussion and providing their insight. The two parties agreed to continue exploring and participating in opportunities for cooperation in areas of maritime issues.
