Online Roundtable Discussion on the South China Sea

The Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Indonesia, organized an online roundtable discussion to provide an opportunity to raise and discuss matters relating to the on the South China Sea.

The rapidly deteriorating situation in the South China Sea i.e., a heightened US-China power competition, has compelled think-tanks from five original ASEAN member states and Vietnam to pull together ideas on how Southeast Asian states can fend off pressure from great powers and reinforce ASEAN centrality.

Experts expounded on the complexity of the Joint Development and alternative arrangements that can reduce animosity, among other topics. The participants also discussed low-hanging fruits initiatives and past efforts proposed under ASEAN. They also resubmitted findings from Track 1.5 diplomacy to governments, to discuss existing feasible frameworks on cooperation, risk mitigation efforts, and confidence-building activity.       

The roundtable was attended by participants from Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Malaysian representatives at the forum were Prof. B. A. Hamzah, Senior Advisor of the National Defence University and  Sumathy Permal, Fellow from the Maritime Institute of Malaysia.
