Virtual Dialogue: The Impact of COVID-19 on Ports in Southeast Asia and Beyond

To learn how ports in Southeast Asia were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and how they coped, select experts congregated in a virtual dialogue. The Innowinn Group hosted the dialogue, entitled The Impact of COVID-19 on Ports in Southeast Asia and Beyond.

The dialogue invited speakers from Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, India, and Belgium. MIMA was honoured to be invited as a moderator, represented by Senior Researcher Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) from the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries.

The meeting was opened with welcoming remarks from Simon Young of Innowin Group, followed by a greeting from Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) as moderator. The first speaker, Capt. Hemant Gupta, a Senior Consultant of the Drewry Maritime Advisor presented his observations on the economy, pre-pandemic and post-pandemic.

Speakers shared their views on the impact of the pandemic, as well as the precautions to mitigate its spread. Rammohan Rao, Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port emphasized the need to protect seafarers via SOPs. Muhamad Razif Ahmad, General Manager of Johor Port Authority and Dr Trinh The Cuong, Director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration shared their views on the initiatives to cope with the pandemic through the ASEAN Single Window (ASW). Upali De Zoysa, Managing Director of Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Piet Opstaele, Innovation Enablement Manager of the Port of Antwerp, related how they had utilised modern technology to efficiently manage ports during the pandemic. The views by the speakers attracted active participation from managers of ports and the related maritime sectors in the region.

MIMA extends its gratitude to the Innowinn Group for the opportunity to contribute to this event. It was a stellar opportunity for representatives from Southeast Asia to share on current port affairs.
