International Workshop on Blue Shipping

17-18 April 2017: Hai Phong, Vietnam

The Pacific Environment, a San Francisco-based environmental organization, in collaboration with the Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) and Vietnam Association of Marine Environment and Nature (VAMEN) organised the two-day ‘International Workshop on Pan-Pacific Blue Shipping’ in Vietnam. Blue shipping in this context refers to promoting environmentally friendly shipping activities.

International experts and representatives from the US, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam, including key organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Vietnam office, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Russia, as well as other public and private institutions, academia and NGOs attended.

The forum covered a number of areas including the use of shipping protected areas to prevent damage to marine ecosystems, emissions control regulations, oil spill response and preparedness, other shipping-related environmental issues, in this region and more. Cheryl Rita Kaur, Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment MIMA spoke on environmental-friendly shipping activities in this region. With increases in commercial shipping activities, a comparison of best practices and developments in the Asian region with that in the Arctic were briefly emphasized during the meeting.

The forum noted the common threats and issues faced by countries in this region, especially on environmental protection in the face of increasing trade and shipping activities. Priorities for action were identified for further collaboration on areas of mutual interest among stakeholders involved in promoting environmental benefits and sustainability.
