2nd International Maritime Academies Seminar

Karachi, Pakistan
17– 19 April 2018

The above seminar was hosted by the Pakistan Marine Academy (PMA) and officiated by the country’s Minister of Ports and Shipping, Mir Hasil Khan Bezinjo. International participation was at the invitation of the Commandant of the PMA, Commodore Akbar Naqi SI(M).

Aimed at promoting the maritime sector and to keep abreast of its modern trends, the seminar gathered 20 experts and marine practitioners from Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Tanzania and Ukraine. Malaysia’s delegation comprised Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) of MIMA, Captain Mohd Fahmi Niza Mohd Tarmizi of the Seafarer Management Centre and Mr Arumugam A/L VS Subramaniam of the Marine Department.

Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) was among the other speakers who included Prof Laila Abubakar, Vice Chancellor for Technical University of Mombasa, Kenya and Prof. Maximo Meija, Director of World Maritime University. Valuable inputs and recommendations were presented as they shared new ideas and maritime technologies.

Cdr Ang presented a paper titled “Education in Malaysia’s Maritime Industry” that provided an overview of Malaysia as a maritime nation and developments in ports, shipping, logistics, and ship building and ship repair (SBSR). He also elaborated on maritime education and training conducted by the Malaysian Maritime Academy, Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology, University Kuala Lumpur, Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology, and other marine training institutes in the country.

During the seminar, the organiser took the opportunity to arrange a tour of PMA where participants were shown the newly equipped bridge and engine room simulator at the academy. PMA cadets also interacted with the Malaysian delegation to inquire about maritime education and sea training in Malaysia.

MIMA expresses its appreciation to the PMA for the invitation and the opportunity to share Malaysia’s maritime education and training with international participants and PMA cadets. As a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on maritime affairs, MIMA looks forward to more collaboration and exchange of ideas between the two institutions.
