Vientiane, Lao PDR

The United Nations’ Economic & Social Commission for Asia & The Pacific (ESCAP) held a capacity building workshop on Strengthening Connectivity among the Cambodia, Lao PDR, Viet Nam and Thailand (CLMVT) area in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The conference was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Public Work & Transport, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and attended by government officials of CLMVT countries. Among the participants were subject matter experts from the ESCAP Secretariat, the ASEAN Secretariat, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corp of India, Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), and the Philippine Interisland Shipping Association (PISA). Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R), Senior Researcher from the Centre for Maritime Economics & Industries of MIMA was honoured to be invited as a speaker for this workshop.

Mr. Boualith Phathoumthong, Deputy Director-General of Lao PDR’s Department of Transport graced the conference with his presence. The workshop began with a briefing by Sandeep Raj Jain, an ESCAP transport specialist who gave an overview of South East Asia’s transport and logistics efficiency and the need to strengthen transport connectivity among CLMVT countries through better transport transit. Later, Sooyeob Kim, also an ESCAP transport specialist, talked about the necessity of coastal shipping and port community systems. Representatives of the CLMVT countries and subject matter experts also offered their views on the issues as well as recommendations to strengthen transport connectivity in the region.

Cdr Ang presented a paper entitled “Promoting Coastal Shipping and Port Community System in ASEAN”. He talked about the status of ASEAN Single Shipping Market (ASSM) and the development of Port Community Systems within the region. Speakers from India, Korea, the Philippines, as well as the ASEAN Secretariat also delivered their respective topics. All in all, there was active participation, especially from the government and the association of logistics providers in Lao PDR and Myanmar.

MIMA extends its hearty congratulations to the UN ESCAP and Lao PDR’s Ministry of Public Work & Transport for a successful workshop. It provided a good opportunity for speakers and representatives from Southeast Asia to share their knowledge in enhancing transport connectivity in the region.
