MIMA awarded grants to nine researchers from local institutions of higher learning in a mock cheque presentation ceremony on 13 October 2020. The inaugural ceremony is an event to showcase the expertise and knowledge of local academicians in contributing to the maritime economies in Malaysia through mini research projects.

Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) delivered a speech to introduce the audience to MIMA's role, as well as its Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI), in producing quality research to support the National Transport Policy (NTP) and the Malaysia Shipping Master Plan (MSMP). Director-General Datuk Dr Sabirin Ja’afar then officiated the event with a remarkable opening speech where he expressed his trust in the researchers' commitment to the research and hoped for a successful outcome.

The objective of selecting the projects is to undertake policy research that can provide advice to relevant Government agencies to promote and safeguard Malaysia's maritime economic interests. The research grants have been awarded to 9 Principal Researchers from various institutions, namely UKM, UPM, UiTM, and UTM. Selected projects cover a range of topics, such as Big Data, underwater tourism, human capital, port infrastructure, marine insurance, and ship financing, among other.

In line with MIMA’s tagline, this exercise will ‘advance the frontiers of maritime knowledge’. MIMA hopes that this golden opportunity will build a strong and professional network, besides acquiring insight on the growing complexity of the maritime economy and best practices in the industries.
