The virtual conference, "Balancing Priorities of The Indo-Pacific: Connectivity and Prosperity" wrapped up today with participants from around the world. MIMA had organised the conference with the  support from the Japanese Embassy and the Australian High Commission in Malaysia.

The conference  assessed current developments in the region and the efforts by Indo-Pacific partners in promoting peace and stability as well as enhancing post-pandemic maritime connectivity.

Director-General Datuk Dr Sabirin Ja’afar officiated the conference with a welcoming remark. He expressed his appreciation for the growing support MIMA has received since last year’s physical conference on the Indo-Pacific, which had gained much traction on the national, regional, and international levels. His speech was followed by an opening speech by the Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, H.E. Hiroshi Oka, and the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, H.E. Andrew Goledzinowsk.

The discussion achieves the objective of setting up a Track-II platform intended to explore the development of balancing priorities within the context of the Indo-Pacific’s peace, stability, and maritime connectivity.  One of the main aspects discussed was the 2019 ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, adopted primarily to contribute to the maintenance of peace, stability, freedom, and prosperity in the region. The Outlook commits to ASEAN's engagement in the Asia-Pacific and the Indian Ocean regions. The second aspect was the need for the Indo-Pacific and ASEAN to cooperate towards accelerating the region’s economic growth, more so in the time of this pandemic.

MIMA thanking the participants while wrapping up the virtual conference

With the insight, knowledge, and views from panellists and questions from the audience, we hope it has shaped some policy advisory for ASEAN, including Malaysia. It was truly an honour for MIMA and our counterparts to be able to organize such an impactful conference full of eminent people from different parts of the government, academia, and the industry. It had provided us with much-needed ideas, interpretations, and information to consolidate our perspective.
